Away With The Fairies

BACKPACKERS HOSTEL IN HOGSBACK, SOUTH AFRICA

“One of the best hostels in the country” – Footprint

Experience the inspiration behind J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit,” and visit South Africa’s very own mystical fairytale land. This perfectly located and very relaxed backpackers commands a stunning view of the Hogsback mountains, part of the Amatola range in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province. It’s an ideal place to kick back and relax, or wander through the forest to the nearby waterfalls with beautiful hiking trails starting in the back garden.

Hogsbackpackers is accommodation consisting of Frodo’s and Bilbo’s which are both en-suite double rooms, The Hobbit self catering cottage, a private double room with a fireplace and a private twin room which are both located in the main house, an 8 bed and 5 bed dorms as well as camping.

Striders is our new lodge on the neighbouring property, it offers 3 en-suite twins, 1 en-suite double, 2 en-suite triple rooms. It is ideal for group accommodation or for anyone wanting to stay in a quiet setting with lovely views, ensuring a good nights sleep.

Camping is in the huge garden, which is well tended and at most times of the year has blooming flowers outlining the views. We have a campers ablution area, with showers and toilets. The site has no electrical points or allocated spaces and is run on a first come, first tent basis.

We also have the worlds scariest treehouse and a bath tub perched on the edge of our cliff, next to the abseiling all with staggering views.

For serious hikers, Hogsback is also the endpoint of the Amatola Trail, a demanding 106km, 5 day hike. We also offer activities ranging from hour-long forest walks to day hikes and abseiling.

You can get to us by City to City, dropping from East London in Alice.

We offer a daily shuttle service between Hogsback and Buccaneers in Chinsta or Sugar Shack in East London.
