Things To Do

FLY FISHING

Fly fishing is an option for a lovely relaxing day, with several well-stocked dams in the area. Bring your own equipment.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Hogsback offers photographic opportunities which are unique in South Africa – winter snowfalls are frequent and year-round it has wonderfully atmospheric light, misty mountains, forests and waterfalls, view our gallery to get a peak of what true beauty is.

THE ECCA POETS

This collaboration of friends (Cathal Lagan, Brian Walter, Quentin Hogg and Norman Morrissey) has been together for over 20 years. They’re the recipients of numerous poetry prizes and have published at least one collection each year since 1989. Free workshops in creative writing are offered to anyone interested.

THE MAQOMA AND SANDILE HERITAGE ROUTES

For those interested in history and Xhosa culture, Hogsback is an ideal base for exploring these routes.

THE AMATOLA HIKING TRAIL

Hogsback is the end point of this spectacular 106km, 6 day trail. We often have hiking groups staying with us before and after the trail – we organise for groups to be dropped off at the starting point, with safe parking for vehicles to ensure peace of mind.
For groups of up to 14, STRIDER’S COTTAGE is an ideal accommodation option, having 3 twin, 1 double and 2 triple rooms, all en-suite, private and comfortable.
It is essential to book your trail and get your map from the Department of Water Affairs & Forestry (DWAF) in King William’s Town. Contact Mrs Darki Ngxangane on 043 642 2571 or visit their website: www.dwaf.gov.za.
